12th annual golf outing Aug. 18 to benefit Loyola Burn Center

Join the 12th annual Burn Awareness Golf Outing benefiting the burn center at Loyola University Medical Center on Friday, Aug. 18, at the Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St. in St. Charles.

Each year in the U.S., nearly two million people suffer from burns. Nearly half a million are severe enough to require treatment at a burn center. The burn center at Loyola University Medical Center is one of the busiest in the United States, treating more than 700 inpatients annually. As a Level 1 trauma and burn center, Loyola treats the most complex and difficult burn cases, as one of only a few burn centers nationally to be rated as a "best provider" in burn care. This year, in order to continue to provide this specialized care, part of the funds raised from the Burn Awareness Golf Outing will benefit the burn center.

Recovery from a burn injury requires support both physically and emotionally to return to what is often referred to as "the new normal." This can takes months, years and possibly a lifetime. As part of Loyola's mission to also treat the human spirit, a special support group known as "Links of Hope" is offered to burn survivors and their loved ones.

Links of Hope is facilitated by a licensed social worker and provides burn survivors, families and friends valuable resources, supporting them in all phases of recovery by sharing and learning with others such as Tony Gonzalez, a burn survivor and volunteer, who have lived through similar experiences.

The Links of Hope program also provides funding for burn survivors to attend the annual Phoenix Society World Burn Congress. This event brings together more than 800 burn survivors, their families, caregivers and firefighters. Part of the funds raised through the Burn Awareness Golf Outing also will benefit the Links of Hope program.
