Fox Valley police reports
Jose A. Velasquez, 44, of Carpentersville, was charged with misdemeanor battery at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a sheriff’s report. Velasquez is accused of getting in a shoving match after a dispute involving him repeatedly parking his truck on a private drive on the 33W0-99 block of Richardson Road near East Dundee.Last Updated Jun 17, 2013 5:49 PM -
Suburban districts spend $320,800 opposing online charter school plan
Updated Jun 17, 2013 11:02 AMThe appeal process for a proposed suburban virtual charter school was cut short last week — but not before 18 suburban school districts spent more than $320,800 in legal fees fighting the issue. Not to mention the hundreds of hours school staffs spent researching the proposal, officials say.

A new generation of directors leads CTE in ‘iSing’
Updated Jun 18, 2013 11:18 AMWhen Allison Cherry stepped onto the Children’s Theatre of Elgin stage in 1992 as a second-grader, she never dreamed that she would one day end up running the show. But 20 years later, Cherry, a 28-year-old teacher at Prairie View Grade School in Burlington, will direct "iSing: Sounds of a New Generation," which will be presented June 21-23 and June 28-30 at the Elgin Community College Arts Center’s Blizzard Theatre.

The Spirit Ringers from Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church performed to a nearly full church along with Organist Michael Waal at First Presbyterian Church, Elgin. Sunday's concert was offered as part of the Phyllis A. Lange-Connelly Memorial Lenten Recital Series, now in its 19 year. The Spirit Ringers are comprised of 13 students from Huntley, Crystal Lake South, and Jacobs high schools. Under the direction of Music and Worship director Jane McMullen, the group has been playing together practicing weekly and playing several times a year during worship services at Shepherd of the Prairie. In July 2012, the group attended the Handbell Musicians of Americas National Seminar in Cincinnati, Ohio where they took part in the Distinctly Teen portion and participated in an ensemble of more than 300 handbell musicians ringing the national anthem for a Cincinnati Reds game at the Great American Ballpark. Amazing people as well as gifted musicians, many of these students are active in additional music programs, including choirs, bands, and private music instruction Sheri Ott (one of the mothers sent the picture)
- Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates. - Gifted teen musician, Lauren Conroy, of Barrington, practices for her recital at St. Catherine of Siena. Lauren is presenting a recital along with organist Maurice Martin on Thursay, March 21 at noon. Lauren is also a gifted violinist and will perform on both instruments.
