Dist. 300 elementary teacher named Reading Educator of the Year
A Perry Elementary School literacy teacher known for an ability to foster a passion for learning in her students was named an Illinois Reading Educator of the Year. Barbara Malinger will receive the award from the Illinois Reading Council at a ceremony in March but was recognized Monday night during the Community Unit District 300 board of education meeting.Last Updated Feb 11, 2013 10:49 PM -
E. Dundee mayor candidate wants meeting on auto auction proposal
Updated Feb 8, 2013 5:49 PMThe two men running for village president in East Dundee disagree whether a public meeting is the best way to explain a controversial auto auction proposal to the residents. East Dundee Trustee Lael Miller says a public meeting is a great way to clear up confusion while Village President Jerald Bartels says there have been enough meetings.

E. Dundee trying to block Walmart from Carpentersville money
Updated Feb 7, 2013 6:23 PMAlthough a Kane County judge recently refused to issue a temporary restraining order that would have blocked Walmart from getting money through a special taxing district in Carpentersville, East Dundee leaders, who brought the action to the court’s attention, are forging ahead with the rest of the lawsuit.

Bartels, Miller bring different backgrounds to top office
Updated Feb 7, 2013 11:34 AMLael Miller and Jerald Bartels, the two men vying to become village president in East Dundee, have similar visions for the town, but come from different backgrounds. Miller, who is challenging Bartels for the seat, works as a commercial real estate agent and says he wants to make East Dundee a better place to live. He ran for office with Trustee Rob Gorman four years ago and is wrapping up his first term on the board. “I think I have more to offer,” Miller said during a Daily Herald endorsement interview. “I can do as good a job, or better.”

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves. - Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates.
