Moving Picture: Algonquin man's art is taxidermy
Vern Brancamp is an artist, but unlike other artists, for the 70-year-old taxidermist nature IS his canvas. "I got started when I was kid," he said. "My dad was a hunter and when we'd come back with pheasant he'd pluck all the feathers and throw them in the trash," he said. "It would eat at my insides to see all those beautiful feathers go to waste so I would pick them out of the trash and pin them out on cardboard."

District 158 education foundation awards almost $12,000
Updated Feb 5, 2013 5:43 PMWhen the Huntley Unit District 158 Education Foundation awarded $11,790 in grants last week, it moved eight teacher projects from dreams to realities. The foundation collects money throughout the year for its annual grant awards. "It's basically like a wish list," said Lori Woods, director of community relations. "Things that aren't typically provided through the district funds, but they also enhance the education."

Dundee-Crown snaps Huntley’s Valley streak at 29

Consecutive Dundee-Crown 3-pointers by seniors Dylan Kissack and Brandon Rodriguez 29 seconds apart turned a tenuous 2-point lead into an 8-point cushion with 1:49 to play and propelled the Chargers to a 47-38 victory in Carpentersville Saturday night.

Bartlett wins big; St. Edward falls
Updated Feb 9, 2013 10:50 PMBartlett 68, East Aurora 36: Lance Whitaker had 16 points and Ryan Dicanio added 13 and Bartlett outscored East Aurora 40-19 in the second half to win this Upstate Eight Valley game. Jon Moss added 11 points for the Hawks (19-7, 8-3).Aurora Christian 83, St. Edward 44: Nick Duffy scored 17 points and Davontae Elam added 10 for the Green Wave (19-6) in this Suburban Christian crossover loss.

- Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates.
