Harper’s partnership with high schools netting positive results
In fall 2010, Harper College and its feeder high school districts formed an unprecedented partnership to shrink student success gaps and better prepare students for career and college readiness. More than halfway through the four-year pilot program, leaders believe they're onto something. Popular Harper College teacher shared his passion for art
Updated Feb 7, 2013 2:23 PMA popular art teacher at Harper College, who helped build up its printmaking studio and left a lasting impression on his students, has died. William Wimmer spent nearly 40 years sharing his passion for art, and more specifically for printmaking, with students of all ages.

Dist. 220 board,teachers reach three-year deal
Updated Feb 6, 2013 5:10 PMThe Barrington Unit District 220 board of education and teachers union have reached a tentative agreement on a three-year teachers' contract, avoiding a potential strike later this month, officials announced Wednesday. The agreement, formally announced in a joint statement on the district's website, barrington220.org, came after a negotiating session that began at 5 p.m. Tuesday and wrapped up about midnight Wednesday.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. The players are: Ryan Anderson, Troy Hajdukovic, Joe Smaga, Shawn Falbo, Chris Refka, Jimmy Brady, Matthew Lee, Jake LaGasse, Alex Kronberg, Brendan Walker, Eric Schaeffer, Ethan Hajdukovic, Matt McCabe (not pictured). - The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves. - Talented dancers ages 7-17 are invited to audition to be a part of the Moscow Ballet's annual production of "The Great Russian Nutcracker." - Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates.
