Barrington boy rejoins classmates after train accident
Classmates cheered as Dominic Szymanski, a fifth grader at Hough Street School in Barrington, made a surprise visit Tuesday, almost two months after the 11-year-old survived being struck by a train. The unexpected reunion came during an all-school assembly for a student performance of "Romeo and Juliet," and a day after Dominic personally thanked the first-responders and good Samaritans who came to his rescue.

Barrington train accident survivor thanks rescuers
Updated May 13, 2013 11:42 PMDominic Szymanski, the 11-year-old Barrington boy who survived being struck by a train in the village on March 15, made his first public appearance Monday night as the police officers, paramedics and good Samaritans who came to his aid nearly two months earlier were honored. "Thank you very much, everyone!" Dominic told the group of well-wishers who gathered outside the meeting room at Barrington village hall.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. Susan McConnell Photography - The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza

George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves. Colleen Gallagher - The Smart Arts Class at St. Mark's Day School in Barrington Hills celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with a big celebration. The 4 and 5 year olds learned about the author, read and acted out scenes from an assortment of Seuss books, and dressed in the cat's red and white hat, red bow and whiskers. JOURNEYS provides supportive services to over 1,300 homeless and at risk families and individuals annually. It also manages the PADS shelter program. - Mrs. Randle-Hayes' Kindergarten enjoyed the snow and all it brought us recently in their Nature Explore Classroom. The Nature Explore Classroom is one of only ten in the state of Illinois. They are fortunate enough to enjoy the outdoor classroom on a daily basis. The Nature Explore Classroom Certification Program is a national initiative that recognizes schools and other organizations that have made a commitment to providing outdoor classrooms and comprehensive programming to help children use the natural world as an integral part of learning. - Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates. - The staff of St. Mark's Day School in Barrington Hills kicked off Healthy Heart Week in conjunction with the American Heart Association. Staff wore red "Rock the Beat" t-shirts as they began a week of teaching about healthy-heart food and exercises; where the heart is and how it works; and also about having a sharing and caring heart. The week will end with the children participating in the Jump Rope for Heart program to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. Day School
