District 300 first to offer fourth-year math course
Seniors at Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown high schools will have the opportunity to take a new math class next year with a textbook designed especially for them. The course was developed by the Alliance for College Readiness which includes Elgin Community College and all of its feeder high school districts — Elgin Area School District U-46, St. Charles Community Unit District 303, Burlington-based Central Unit District 301, and Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300, the only district to offer the course next year.Last Updated May 14, 2013 11:24 PM -

Dist. 300 considers second online charter school plan
Updated May 13, 2013 11:14 PMCommunity Unit District 300 board members have moved from one charter school proposal to another, holding a public hearing for the Illinois Online Charter School. The charter would be for Northern Kane Educational Corp., which already runs the Cambridge Lakes Charter School in Pingree Grove and serves District 300 students, but also extend to others in the state.

Randi Peterson added a double and an RBI for the Red Raiders (19-10) while winning pitcher Haley Spannraft was 2-for-3 and Megan Baczewski had an RBI. Spannraft allowed 6 hits.Westminster Christian 23, St. Benedict 1: Ally Heischler (2B, 3 RBI), Rachel Fugiel (2b, 3B, 3 RBI), Jackie Calabrese (2B, 3B, RBI), Maddie King and Liz Farwell (3-for-4, 2B) each had 3 hits to lead the Warriors to an easy win in the semifinals of the Class 1A Westminster regional. Rachel Rich was 2-for-4 with a double and triple for Westminster (11-8), which will play the winner of today’s game between Christian Liberty and Luther North in Saturday’s championship game. Fugiel was the winning pitcher, allowing just 1 hit with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk.Batavia 10, Larkin 8: Alex Buhrow was 4-for-4 with a home run, double and 2 RBI and Lexi Price went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI but Larkin (3-22, 2-13) fell just short in the Upstate Eight River. Sarah Hansen was the losing pitcher.Hampshire 4, McHenry 1: Jordan Hook was 2-for-4 with a double and Aly Snider added a double while Jen Hurst scattered 6 hits with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk to lead the Whip-Purs (10-17) to an FVC crossover win.Elgin 14, Streamwood 7: Anna Eckholm was 5-for-5 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles and 5 RBI to lead the Maroons (12-11, 6-9) to a UEC River win. Monica Stockman had a double and 2 RBI and Lissette Sanchez was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Elgin. Jessica Rago was the winning pitcher. For Streamwood (5-18, 2-13, Jessica Daley went 3-for-4 with a double and Holly Foret was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kaitlyn Hedger took the loss.Jacobs 14, Woodstock 4: Alyssa Lach was 2-for-3 with a double and Emily Borg had a home run as Jacobs (15-14) won this FVC crossover. Kelsey Peters was the winning pitcher.

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves. The Spirit Ringers from Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church performed to a nearly full church along with Organist Michael Waal at First Presbyterian Church, Elgin. Sunday's concert was offered as part of the Phyllis A. Lange-Connelly Memorial Lenten Recital Series, now in its 19 year. The Spirit Ringers are comprised of 13 students from Huntley, Crystal Lake South, and Jacobs high schools. Under the direction of Music and Worship director Jane McMullen, the group has been playing together practicing weekly and playing several times a year during worship services at Shepherd of the Prairie. In July 2012, the group attended the Handbell Musicians of Americas National Seminar in Cincinnati, Ohio where they took part in the Distinctly Teen portion and participated in an ensemble of more than 300 handbell musicians ringing the national anthem for a Cincinnati Reds game at the Great American Ballpark. Amazing people as well as gifted musicians, many of these students are active in additional music programs, including choirs, bands, and private music instruction Sheri Ott (one of the mothers sent the picture)
- Congressman Roskam cancelled his meeting with families to discuss immigration reform and its effect on families. The families then decorated his door with messages written on colorful butterflies. The butterflies symbolize freedom and migration. Colin Tysoe
- Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates. - Gifted teen musician, Lauren Conroy, of Barrington, practices for her recital at St. Catherine of Siena. Lauren is presenting a recital along with organist Maurice Martin on Thursay, March 21 at noon. Lauren is also a gifted violinist and will perform on both instruments.
