Third graders at Oak Grove School follow business plan to feed kids in Haiti
A third-grade class at Oak Grove School in Green Oaks formed a company to raise funds for hungry children in Haiti. Their effort raised abouit $700 and earned a visit of thanks Monday from the CEO of Feed My Starving Children. "Kids provide a significant amount of the volunteering and support," CEO Mark Crea said. "It's kids feeding kids."

Stevenson High considering going mobile with an app
Updated Feb 6, 2013 12:41 PMStevenson High School officials are considering creating an app that would allow students and parents to access schedules, calendars and other information on smart phones and tablets. Neighboring Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools launched their first apps in December.

Libertyville surges past Wheeling
Updated Feb 11, 2013 11:21 PMLibertyville's girls basketball team sure picked the right time of the season for a lengthy winning streak. The string has reached six after Monday's Class 4A regional play-in game, as No. 13 seed Libertyville topped No. 17 Wheeling, the regional host, 52-47. Libertyville's Dana Kym pulled down 12 of her 14 rebounds in second half, including one with 30 seconds remaining after Wheeling attempted a 3-pointer. Kym was fouled on the play and made 2 free throws that gave Libertyville a 50-43 lead.

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine.
