Schaumburg mayor leads by example during Bike to Work Week
Updated May 17, 2013 4:21 PMSchaumburg Mayor Al Larson led by example Friday morning as he hosted a Bike to Work Week ride to his own workplace at the village's Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center. Larson and Schaumburg Park District Commissioner Bob Schmidt shared a tandem bicycle from the ride's starting point at the park district's Meineke Recreation Center on Weathersfield Way.

Updated May 15, 2013 7:43 PMUniversity of Illinois men's basketball coach John Groce, women's basketball coach Matt Bollant, men's gymnastics coach Justin Spring and women's soccer coach Janet Rayfield stopped in Rolling Meadows on Wednesday to meet with fans and Daily Herald subscribers. They're taking part in the annual Illini Caravan.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. The players are: Ryan Anderson, Troy Hajdukovic, Joe Smaga, Shawn Falbo, Chris Refka, Jimmy Brady, Matthew Lee, Jake LaGasse, Alex Kronberg, Brendan Walker, Eric Schaeffer, Ethan Hajdukovic, Matt McCabe (not pictured). - The 8th grade girls Hersey Huskies feeder team won the Northern Illinois Girls Feeder Association chamionship this season. The team's 3 year league record was 70 - 1. k. burnetti
- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza

George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves. JOURNEYS provides supportive services to over 1,300 homeless and at risk families and individuals annually. It also manages the PADS shelter program. Danielle Austin - Mrs. Randle-Hayes' Kindergarten enjoyed the snow and all it brought us recently in their Nature Explore Classroom. The Nature Explore Classroom is one of only ten in the state of Illinois. They are fortunate enough to enjoy the outdoor classroom on a daily basis. The Nature Explore Classroom Certification Program is a national initiative that recognizes schools and other organizations that have made a commitment to providing outdoor classrooms and comprehensive programming to help children use the natural world as an integral part of learning.
