Prospect gymnast finds 'place that fits' despite challenges
Jill Sevilla won't be competing for Prospect High School when the girls gymnastics state championships open Friday, but she's already a winner. Jill, who has Down syndrome, has been on the junior varsity team this season, and event competed in a match earlier in the year. “The girls that are less experienced pick an event to focus on, and Jill picked floor routine,” says her coach, Sara Koshelev. “We worked with her to improve her jumps and some tumbling passes.”

Harper’s partnership with high schools netting positive results
Updated Feb 11, 2013 11:07 PMIn fall 2010, Harper College and its feeder high school districts formed an unprecedented partnership to shrink student success gaps and better prepare students for career and college readiness. More than halfway through the four-year pilot program, leaders believe they're onto something. "We think we have a model worth emulating," Harper President Ken Ender said of the Northwest Educational Council for Student Success.

Early voting in primary election continues through Feb. 23
Updated Feb 11, 2013 2:44 PMEarly voting for the Feb. 26 primary election began Monday and continues through Saturday, Feb. 23. In the Northwest suburbs, a Republican primary will take place in Palatine Township for the offices of supervisor, trustee, clerk and highway commissioner. In Elgin, a nonpartisan primary will whittle down a field of nine people running for a single 2-year council seat.

District 54 appoints three new school principals
Updated Feb 8, 2013 2:13 PMSchaumburg Township Elementary District 54 board members this week appointed three new principals for the 2013-14 school year. Joann Kort will be principal of Dirksen Elementary in Schaumburg, Jillian Sagan will be principal of Mead Junior High in Elk Grove Village and Chris Bingen will be principal of Addams Junior High in Schaumburg.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. The players are: Ryan Anderson, Troy Hajdukovic, Joe Smaga, Shawn Falbo, Chris Refka, Jimmy Brady, Matthew Lee, Jake LaGasse, Alex Kronberg, Brendan Walker, Eric Schaeffer, Ethan Hajdukovic, Matt McCabe (not pictured). - Chaos reigns amongst the inhabitants of Armageddon, one of three haunts featured in Asylum Xperiment Haunted Attractions at the Odeum Expo in Villa Park. Mark Wedow
- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine.
