Dist. 300 elementary teacher named Reading Educator of the Year
A Perry Elementary School literacy teacher known for an ability to foster a passion for learning in her students was named an Illinois Reading Educator of the Year. Barbara Malinger will receive the award from the Illinois Reading Council at a ceremony in March but was recognized Monday night during the Community Unit District 300 board of education meeting.Last Updated Feb 11, 2013 10:49 PM -

St. Edward posts regional win
Updated Feb 11, 2013 11:14 PMHealthy at last, the St. Edward girls basketball team cruised to its most convincing win of the year in Monday's postseason opener in Lake Villa. No. 18 St. Edward took a 19-point lead after one quarter and held No. 15 Chicago Senn to 2 points in the third quarter of a 66-28 victory in a Class 3A Lakes regional play-in game.

Westminster moves on to sectional final
Updated Feb 11, 2013 10:29 PMProvidence St. Mel gave the Westminster Christian girls basketball team fits Monday night. But not for long. Trailing 7-4 with 2:17 to play in the first quarter, Westminster went on a 20-0 run and eventually rolled to a 58-25 win over St. Mel in the first semifinal of the Class1A Westminster Christian sectional. The Warriors (25-4), who lost in the sectional finals last year, will take on the winner of tonight's game between Morgan Park Academy and North Shore Country Day on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the DeKalb supersectional next Monday.

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves.
