Schaumburg Boomers ready to start second season
The Schaumburg Boomers' second opening day is this Thursday, May 16, but the independent league baseball team rolled out the red carpet two days early by hosting the Schaumburg Business Association's monthly breakfast meeting.

Bicyclist killed on Higgins Road near Route 53 ramp
Updated May 14, 2013 10:04 PMA bicyclist was killed Tuesday morning after apparently crossing Higgins Road against a red light at the exit ramp from northbound Route 53, Illinois State Police report.

Schaumburg has new Dial-A-Ride provider
Updated May 14, 2013 6:30 PMMV Transportation Inc. will be the new service provider for Schaumburg's Dial-A-Ride Transportation (DART) service beginning Saturday, June 1. DART is a door-to-door transportation service provided to the general public by the village with funding assistance from Pace Suburban Bus. DART provides pickup and drop-off service from anywhere within the village as well as to Harper College in Palatine.

District 300 first to offer fourth-year math course
Updated May 14, 2013 5:07 PMSeniors at Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown high schools will have the opportunity to take a new math class next year with a textbook designed especially for them. The course was developed by the Alliance for College Readiness which includes Elgin Community College and all of its feeder high school districts — Elgin Area School District U-46, St. Charles Community Unit District 303, Burlington-based Central Unit District 301, and Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300, the only district to offer the course next year.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. - Congratulations to the 7th Grade Girls Basketball Team from St. Hubert Catholic School for winning the 2013 NWCC 7th Grade Girls Basketball Championship. Yssa Sto. - The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
