High-schoolers walk at Harper commencement
Updated May 18, 2013 5:19 PMIncluded in the 550 or so students who donned caps and gowns Saturday at Harper College's commencement was a contingent not yet old enough to vote, but qualified to take vital signs, transfer patients and practice infection control. A total of 18 high-schoolers, 17 from Wheeling High School alone, walked after completing their Certified Nursing Assistant certificate, among the numerous fast-growing dual credit options that Harper offers.

District 220 parents back status quo on school calendar
Updated May 15, 2013 10:41 AMParents in Barrington Community Unit School District 220 appear to be happy with the status quo — at least when it comes to the school calendar. Casting their votes with red stickers, parents at a public hearing Tuesday supported keeping the calendar as is instead of proposals that would move first-semester finals before winter break.

Susan McConnell Photography - The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. "Delightful and Delicious!"
George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. Proceeds from the event went to the 3,400 children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental/intellectual disabilities that Clearbrook serves. Colleen Gallagher - The Smart Arts Class at St. Mark's Day School in Barrington Hills celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with a big celebration. The 4 and 5 year olds learned about the author, read and acted out scenes from an assortment of Seuss books, and dressed in the cat's red and white hat, red bow and whiskers. - The staff of St. Mark's Day School in Barrington Hills kicked off Healthy Heart Week in conjunction with the American Heart Association. Staff wore red "Rock the Beat" t-shirts as they began a week of teaching about healthy-heart food and exercises; where the heart is and how it works; and also about having a sharing and caring heart. The week will end with the children participating in the Jump Rope for Heart program to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. Day School
- Gifted teen musician, Lauren Conroy, of Barrington, practices for her recital at St. Catherine of Siena. Lauren is presenting a recital along with organist Maurice Martin on Thursay, March 21 at noon. Lauren is also a gifted violinist and will perform on both instruments. "Who's Got Talent?"
Students at St. Mary of the Annunciation School in Mundelein have lots of talent. At the annual
school talent show, kindergarten through fifth grade students entertained the crowd with song, dance,
music, comedy and other talents. The show received rave reviews from faculty, parents, grandparents,
and classmates.
