Minor injuries for 17 Algonquin students in bounce house accident
Six students from Algonquin Lakes Elementary School were sent to area hospitals for evaluation Thursday afternoon after they were injured in a bounce house during an indoor school celebration, officials said. Another 11 students were treated at the school and released to their parents. There were no serious injuries.

Harper College team scores big at NASA rocket competition
Updated May 23, 2013 12:56 PMTheir rocket crashed during a test run, but a Harper College-based team of science and engineering students took fourth place in a national NASA rocketry competition, besting big names like MIT and Northwestern. "To be mentioned in the same sentence as such prestigious schools is really awesome," said student Eric Meyers.

Ex-U-46 teacher accuses district of forcing resignation
Updated May 20, 2013 5:11 PMA former U-46 teacher has sued the district, arguing she was essentially fired in February 2012 after a hospitalization in fall 2010. Schaumburg resident Jeanette Boland, a former tenured teacher at Larsen and Kenyon Woods middle schools in Elgin and South Elgin, respectively, argues Elgin Area School District U-46 violated the Illinois Human Rights Act by saying she had a psychological problems, thus discriminating against her.

Turnquist retires as longest-serving male teacher in U-46
Updated May 22, 2013 6:57 PMWith 41 years in the classroom, Jerry Turnquist will retire as the longest-serving male teacher in Elgin Area School District U-46 history. Turnquist spent his entire career at Ellis Middle School after growing up just a few blocks away. Colleagues gathered to recognize his career, as well as the work of three other retiring Ellis teachers — Phylis Dunlap-Huerta, Carlos Salgado and Steve Childs, who attended Ellis as a student and then later walked its halls as a band instructor.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. - While the latest fashions brought more than 250 supporters of Chicago Uptown Ministry together for the Ministrys annual Luncheon and Fashion Show on March 10th, they also drew inspiration from being able to help provide services to the residents of Chicagos Uptown community. Generous donations from attendees and sponsors meant more than $33,000 was raised to help provide services such as a food pantry, after school/summer school programs, ESL classes, counseling services and the new Ways to Work program, which helps families buy or repair a car, allowing parents to more easily meet job demands while raising a child. - The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza

- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." - Lindsey Heinritz (Enid) and Carly Gurrieri (Elle) discover they're practically twins in the CHS Production of "Legally Blonde The Musical." Under the direction of Josh Nilsson, more than 125 students and faculty have collaborated over a four-month period to create the 2013 Conant musical. Opening night is Friday, Feb. 22 at Conant High School’s Plate Auditorium. Additional performances at 7 p.m. include: Saturday, Feb. 23, Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2.
