Montini leads the way at Antioch
Updated Feb 9, 2013 10:44 PMWith the top-ranked Class 2A wrestling team in the state in the field, getting out of the Antioch individual sectional was going to be a difficult task Saturday. Ten-time state champion Montini headlined the powerful meet with eight champions going to Champaign next weekend for the state meet. The top four finishers in each of the 14 weight classes earned a berth to the Assembly Hall, and the Broncos had qualifiers in every division except for 285 pounds. Carmel Catholic proved to be the big winners out of Lake County, as the Corsairs will send four individuals downstate, including No. 1-ranked senior Jake Cochrane (40-1).

Dunning’s FT help Grant past Vernon Hills
Updated Feb 8, 2013 11:51 PMThree-pointers were here, there and everywhere at Grant on Friday night. The host Bulldogs hit a total of six 3-pointers while visiting Vernon Hills hit five of its own. At one point in the second quarter, the teams combined to hit four straight shots from long distance, and five overall. Yet, despite the importance that the triples played for both teams, it was a shot that was worth a single solitary point that made the biggest difference of all. Junior forward Steve Dunning hit a free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining in the game to give Grant a 59-58 North Suburban Conference Prairie Division victory and send the home fans into an excited frenzy on senior night.

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
