Des Plaines forum stresses vigilance against hazing
A community forum on hazing and bullying held Wednesday night in Des Plaines in response to the hazing of soccer players last September at Maine West High School drew a sparse audience of fewer than 50 local residents but prompted a surprise appearance by activists on the issue from Indiana and Georgia. "I didn't come to speak," said Pam Champion, the mother of Robert Champion, a Florida A&M band student who died after being beaten in a hazing ritual. "Any school that tells you that they have everything under control, they're lying."Last Updated May 23, 2013 12:15 AM -

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza

- Sadly, my home was one of the many home that where affected by major rain damage and accumulation in back yard, only few feet from my home! I was told to go to the Church in town, where I was greeted by MANY volunteers, from the Church, and neighbors. They where all so happy to help everyone..they filled ( as many sand bags) as you needed, and even loaded them into my car. I am a single Mother, with no help, I would have never been able to do this with out ALL their help , and chances are very high my home would have flooded ( it did a small amount, but was able to catch it in time with the sand bags before it was able to spread any closer to my house ! These few pictures I snapped really depicts the "team work" these volunteers provided, and I strongly feel they ALL need to be reconized for all they did to help many many people. And how the community comes together as one to help each other in times of disasters and need. I would be SO thankful if you where able to post at least one of the photos to show how fabulous it was run, and how many homes they prob saved by their selfishness, caring, giving they provided to the community ! - Des Plaines Police Chief William Kushner awarded Kenneth Krozel with a Citizen Award of Valor at the Monday, March 4, 2013 City Council Meeting held at Des Plaines City Hall, 1420 Miner Street. At 7:36 AM, Friday, January 18, 2013, the Des Plaines Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the Mobil Gas Station, 800 W. Oakton Street, for an explosion/ structure fire, as reported by an individual passing by. Initial reports indicated a gas pump had exploded and a person was injured in the fire. At the time of the fire, Kenneth Krozel was pumping gas into his vehicle when he observed a fire ball coming from the next pump, causing the ground and the owners vehicle to start on fire. He ran over to the front entrance of the gas station, grabbed the outdoor tire extinguisher, and extinguished the fire at the pump. When the officers arrived on the scene they spoke to Mr. Krozel who related no one was injured and he had put out the fire. Upon notification regarding the fire at the gas pump, management initiated an emergency shut off of all the gas pumps. The consensus of the public safety personnel on the scene and the Mobil Gas Station management is that Kenneth Krozels quick thinking and immediate action prevented a potentially catastrophic gas pump explosion and/or structure fire. According to Police Chief Kushner Mr. Krozels heroic actions potentially saved a vehicle owners life and the lives of many other who may have been affected had the fire not been contained prior to reaching the volatile gasoline tanks. Mr. Krozels actions went above and beyond those of a concerned citizen and demonstrated consideration and caring for the well-being of a fellow human. Sean Flanagan and officers Patrick Brzezinski, James Lave, Martin Reutimann, and Marcus Benavidez for an incident that occurred Nov. 4. Officers responded to a domestic disturbance call. The officers were able to ascertain that the husband, who was in the detached garage, was unarmed and suicidal. As the officers approached the garage, they heard noises coming from within. The officers entered the unlocked garage and found the husband with an electrical cord wound around his neck and tied to a rafter. - Des Plaines Police Chief William Kushner granted resident Jose D. Ortiz the Citizen Award of Valor at the Jan. 22 city council meeting. On Nov. 30, Jose D. Ortiz and his elderly mother were conducting business at the First Merit Bank on Lee Street. Ortiz observed one of the tellers placing a large amount of cash into a plastic bag held by a customer. The offender dropped a large amount of cash, along with other items of evidence that would later aid in identifying the offender. The subject broke free of Mr. Ortiz and fled. The offender was subsequently taken into custody by federal authorities. (pictured left to right) Des Plaines resident Jose D.
