Former Wheaton man guilty of murder for hire plots
Gordon Vanderark, once expecting to be paroled in about 6 years, may never again see life outside of his prison cell.The former Wheaton man was found guilty Tuesday of 18 counts of solicitation of murder and solicitation of murder for hire for attempting to hire a recently paroled felon to kill DuPage County Circuit Judge Blanche Hill Fawell, Prosecutor Audrey Anderson and Vanderark's wife.

Suburban man the standby star of 'Book of Mormon'
Updated May 14, 2013 5:26 AMEight times a week, Rob Colletti goes down to the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago, warms up his vocals, sits in the dressing room while the hit musical "The Book of Mormon" is performed, and then goes home. Colletti, a Wheaton native, is the standby for the lead role of the nerdy but lovable Elder Cunningham. And, "it's been incredible," he said.

Tree climbing championships showcase ‘industry athletes’
Updated May 11, 2013 5:36 PM"Industry athletes" who climb, cut and care for trees for a living showcased their trade Saturday in Wheaton during the annual Illinois Tree Climbing Championships. Tree service trucks marked the spot where 18 competitors, all professional arborists, competed in five events and a master's challenge, using tall oaks at Cantigny Park as their obstacle course or raceway. "This competition showcases what the guys have to do in the field every day," said April Toney, executive director of the Illinois Arborist Association, which hosted the event.

- The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza

- First- and second-graders at the Immanuel Lutheran School in Elmhurst enjoyed telling the Christmas story with residents at Greencastle Assisted Living. The students sang songs and recited Scripture. They also discussed the Advent wreath and illustrated pictures of it, and listened to "The Night Before Christmas" with the residents. Auditions will be held August 29, 2012, at the Southport Performing Arts Conservatory (SPACE) located at 3433-37 W. Peterson Ave., Chicago.
