- Since 1909 when W.D. Boyce brought scouting to America, the guiding principles of the Boy Scouts of America has remained the same; preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Deicke Scout Shop, which is operated by the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council, supports the mission of scouting through its large inventory of uniforms, camping equipment, achievement recognitions and more. Plus, the shop serves as a resource center for information and registration of upcoming group outings and activities of the Three Fires Council. In 2010, 357 Eagle Scouts, 16,304 Cub Scouts, 6,574 Boy Scouts, 708 Venturers, and 1,547 Explorers were registered members; plus the Council is proud to serve one of the largest special needs packs in the country. - Chris and Bob Shamberg of Inverness were among the 800 music lovers who converged upon Pick-Staiger Concert Hall on the Northwestern University campus December 4 for the 22nd Celebration Concert. The benefit featured two-time Grammy Award winner Sylvia McNair, and world renowned opera singer (and Evanston native) Nancy Gustafson. The concert raised $340,000 for the Evanston-based Over the Rainbow Association, founded in 1974 to provide independent living solutions and continuing development of affordable, barrier-free housing for adults with physical disabilities. St. Colette School celebrated the graduation of its 8th grade class on June 4, 2011. Faculty, staff, family and friends were on hand to commemorate the occasion. The school community celebrated mass to honor its graduates, followed by an awards ceremony and presentation of diplomas. The graduates participated in their celebration by providing accomplished song and instrument performances throughout the ceremony.

National History Day Quest Academy finalists from left to right: Frani O’Toole, West Dundee; Marissa Howe, Hoffman Estates; Jenna Chin, Inverness; Birkan Cetinkaya, Vernon Hills; Advith Chelikani, Palatine; Max Kontorovich, Buffalo Grove; Owen Chang, Barrington. These seven students from Quest Academy, Palatine, beat out thousands to earn spots at the recent annual National History Day competition held at the University of Maryland June 12-16. Here, the Quest students displayed their papers, documentaries and websites to compete against participants from all over the globe. Schools from the United States, Guam, American Samoa, China, as well as Department of Defense Schools in Europe had students who qualified to participate. Top finishers from Quest include Marissa Howe, 7th grade, who placed 10th in the nation for her individual documentary, “The Attempted Nazi March in Skokie: Freedom for the Speech We Hate,” and Jenna Chin, 8th grade, who placed 11th in the nation for her paper, “The Escobedo v. Illinois Supreme Court Case.”
