For some, this shared love of automobiles comes naturally, while others require a bit more time to rev up. Jerry Bertram's wife falls in the latter category when it comes to the Palatine couple's 1969 Pontiac GTO.

Harper’s partnership with high schools netting positive results
Updated Feb 11, 2013 3:25 PMIn fall 2010, Harper College and its feeder high school districts formed an unprecedented partnership to shrink student success gaps and better prepare students for career and college readiness. More than halfway through the four-year pilot program, leaders believe they're onto something. "We think we have a model worth emulating," Harper President Ken Ender said of the Northwest Educational Council for Student Success.

Early voting in primary election continues through Feb. 23
Updated Feb 11, 2013 2:44 PMEarly voting for the Feb. 26 primary election began Monday and continues through Saturday, Feb. 23. In the Northwest suburbs, a Republican primary will take place in Palatine Township for the offices of supervisor, trustee, clerk and highway commissioner. In Elgin, a nonpartisan primary will whittle down a field of nine people running for a single 2-year council seat.

Palatine music store owner’s dying wish to be honored
Updated Feb 10, 2013 6:31 PMFor John Giovannoni, co-owner of The Music Room in downtown Palatine, a dying request has become a reason to celebrate. “His request before he passed away was that he didn’t want a service or a memorial or a funeral or any of that, but he wanted a party,” said Lindsey Lindstrom, a former employee who is organizing the party. The party celebrating Giovannoni’s life will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at The Music Room, 26 N. Brockway in Palatine.

- Congratulations to the 14U Palatine Travelers Bulldogs on their final season together before heading off to high school. The Bulldogs were successful in the Elite division of the Mid Suburban Baseball League where they came in third place overall in the MSBL Elite division championship June 18-24. They also took first place in the Lucchese Tournament in Palatine May 18-20. On their best run of the season, at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Muskegon, Mich. July 6-8, they went 6-0, winning the championship and outscoring their opponents 69-13. The team is managed by Jeff Refka and coached by Steve Hajdukovic, Marc LaGasse and Bernie Schaeffer. The players are: Ryan Anderson, Troy Hajdukovic, Joe Smaga, Shawn Falbo, Chris Refka, Jimmy Brady, Matthew Lee, Jake LaGasse, Alex Kronberg, Brendan Walker, Eric Schaeffer, Ethan Hajdukovic, Matt McCabe (not pictured). "A Big Bear High Five"
Twelve-year-old Audrey Birk of Palatine gets a celebratory high five from Chicago Bears mascot Staley as she crosses the finish line of the 10th annual Midtown 5K Run & Walk held Sept. 29. The event has generated more than $250,000 for Bears Care. Dave Silbar, SilbarPR - Palatine Park District presented American English on June 15 as part of the free Sounds of Summer concert series. - The Choral-aires Chorus placed second in the Community Teams category raising funds for breast cancer research last month, missing first place by only $25. The chorus raised $3,985 by the time the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure rolled around, with more donations still coming, surpassing their original goal of $3,000. The Choral-Aires has five current chorus members that either have, or have had, breast cancer. And this year, 2 of the team members discovered that their mothers have breast cancer, so they were walking on race day for their moms. One member of our team, Kara Gray, celebrated her 10 years without breast cancer this year. While not a Chorus member, she is the daughter of long-time member Martha Anderson, who also walked with the team on race day. Lindsey Herza
- On Jan. 21, Elmhurst City Clerk Patty Spencer presented the Choral-Aires Chorus with a proclamation declaring January "Sweet Adelines Month." The Choral-Aires, an Elmhurst-based Sweet Adelines International chapter, is hosting Guest Nights each Monday in January from 6:45-9:45 pm at the Redeemer Lutheran Church Recreation Center as part of the SAI Global Open House event. George and Sarah Naxera of Kildeer sample mouth-watering morsels from 20 local restaurants at Clearbrook's fourth annual "Around the World Food Tasting" on Oct. 16 at Arlington Toyota-Scion in Palatine. - Talented dancers ages 7-17 are invited to audition to be a part of the Moscow Ballet's annual production of "The Great Russian Nutcracker." The trumpet section featured in Bugler's Holiday at Sunday's Concert, May 6.
