'Triple Your Giving' benefits Northern Illinois Food Bank Nov. 22-28

LifeSource is kicking off the holiday season by encouraging all Chicagoans to help stock not only the shelves of area hospitals with an adequate supply of blood, but also help stock the shelves of Northern Illinois Food Bank.

As part of its annual "Triple Your Giving" initiative, LifeSource will donate $1 to the Northern Illinois Food Bank for every participating donor who visits any of its 18 Chicago area community donor centers or mobile blood drives from Nov. 22-28.

In addition, donors are encouraged to bring a canned food donation as all blood drives and community donor centers will be set up to handle these collections, which will be delivered to the food bank.

"Northern Illinois Food Bank is grateful to partner with LifeSource to help the one in seven people facing hunger in our area," said Erik Jacobsen, communications manager for Northern Illinois Food Bank. The impact of this campaign will be widespread considering every $1 donated to the Food Bank provides $8 of food for our neighbors in need."

Appointments are preferred, but all walk-ins are welcome. Donors can schedule their appointment by calling LifeSource at (877) 543-3768 or visiting www.lifesource.org. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with parental consent).

In preparation for their donation, donors are asked to eat well, stay hydrated and arrive with proper identification. As Illinois' largest blood center, LifeSource hosts blood drives daily and also operates community donor centers across the greater Chicago area.

Established in 1987 and a business unit of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine, LifeSource is a nonprofit organization and the largest blood center in Illinois. LifeSource provides blood products and transfusion-related services to hospitals in the Chicago area. Blood donors must be 17 years old, or 16 with signed parental consent, and should prepare by eating a meal or healthy snack and properly hydrating. Donors must bring photo identification when they donate. For more information, go to lifesource.org.
