Call to visual artists

[Please note: there will be more galleries/shows/exhibitions going on in St. Charles during the Charlie's event. Stay tuned for more artist calls]

Charlie's Center for the Arts is a citywide, all-arts event taking place in St. Charles from Sept. 11-14, 2014.

The pop-up gallery FOR THIS CALL will be open from Sept. 12 to Oct. 5. More information about the Charlie's event may be found on the SCAC website. Charlie's will feature multiple visual art/film venues throughout the city. The theme of the "centerpiece" art gallery is: "What's Black and White and Read/Red All Over?"

Entries can be in any style or medium, but should have a connection to the theme, which could include:

• Graphic art

• Cartoons/comics

• Any medium or mixed media work that could include newspapers, such as encaustic, origami, etc.

• Any 2D or 3-D work that prominently includes the colors of black, white, and/or red.

• Any 2D or 3-D work that suggests an alternative answer to this classic riddle, i.e. "A sunburned zebra".

Please review the instructions below for submitting your electronic entry. There is no form to fill out. Please email the requested information and the images of your work to ArtistLiaison@StCharlesArtsCouncil.org.

FORMAT:

Juried - Jury Fee $20 total, regardless of the number of pieces submitted. (Fee is nonrefundable). Fees can be mailed to: St. Charles Arts Council, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174.

SUBMISSIONS:

Number of pieces of art per artist: Artists may submit up to 15 pieces for jurying. Jurors may select one or more pieces from each artist.

Images for Jurying: If you wish to submit an entry, please send, via email, jpg images of the artwork that you would like to enter in the gallery/show. Each image should be 500 KB or less in size for ease of sending, receiving, and jurying.

Include for each image the title of the piece, medium, dimensions and selling price.

IMPORTANT DATES:

Images must be submitted for jurying by July 25, 2014.

Artists will be notified of the jury's selection on or by August 4.

Receipt of work - week of Sept. 7 - specific days/times to follow

Gallery will be open:

Friday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Opening reception:

Friday, Sept. 12, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Gallery will close:

Sunday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m.

EXHIBITION/SALE DETAILS:

The gallery will be staffed by volunteers and artists. It is not mandatory for artists to staff the gallery, but it is strongly encouraged. We strive to have the gallery open during standard retail hours.

The artwork will be in the gallery on consignment.

The artist exhibition fees are:

1 to 7 pieces accepted into the gallery - $45

8 to 15 pieces accepted into the gallery - $90

The St. Charles Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) public charity, and so cannot take a commission on artwork sold. Artists will receive 100 percent of the selling price of their work. Illinois state sales tax will be collected by the arts council, and it will be the responsibility of the artist to pay to the state. The arts council has liability insurance to cover the insurance value of the art in the gallery. All artwork must be ready to hang/install. Sculpture pedestals/stands must be provided by the artist. All artwork must be for sale. Delivery and pickup of the artwork will be the artist's responsibility - either in person or mailed.

There is a comprehensive promotional plan for the event and the gallery that includes a P.R. campaign, a social media campaign, and cross promotional opportunities with local retailers, restaurants, and arts organizations/businesses. The program website is neXtgalleryStCharles.org. All artists in the show will be included on the website. Artists' names will link from the neXt gallery website to artists' websites or other electronic sites.
