West Chicago, Illinois: May 16, 2014 - The West Chicago Police Department Traffic Safety Unit announced that the traffic enforcement campaign conducted on Illinois Route 59 on May 9, 2014 was a success. The effort was part of a multi-jurisdictional traffic safety campaign. Police agencies from Lake County to Will County were out in force to focus on education and enforcement of traffic safety laws. Speeding and occupant restraint violations were the primary focus of the enforcement initiative. In total, more than 200 citations and warnings were issued.

West Chicago patrol officers worked together with the Traffic Safety Unit to issue 34 tickets and 9 warnings. Of the tickets issued, 11 were for occupant restraint violations and 4 were speeding violations.

A Roadside Safety Check was also conducted along Route 59 on May 9, 2014 as part of the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant. The West Chicago Police Department worked with the West Chicago Emergency Services Disaster Agency (ESDA) and the Bensenville Emergency Management Agency to coordinate the safety checkpoint. In total, 386 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. By the end of the evening, a total of 29 citations and 38 warnings were issued including, but not limited to; 1 DUI arrest, 5 unlicensed driver citations, 17 citations and 8 warnings for uninsured vehicles, 1 child restraint citation, and 4 occupant restraint warnings.

The number of warnings indicates the Department's continued commitment to educating the motoring public on traffic safety.

A future traffic safety campaign is scheduled for Illinois Route 64 on June 4, 2014.
