Disk Golf Tournament to be Held In Palatine
Palatine Park District is home to a nine hole disc golf course located at Margreth Riemer Reservoir which is located east of Quentin Road between Palatine Road and Wood Street. This summer, the course is being expanded to a full 18 hole. In June, Boy Scout Troop 335 Eagle Scout candidate Casey Wagner had a work day installing the sleeves for the baskets for the course expansion. The group installed the 12 sleeves for the future pin placements. A second work day is scheduled to install the baskets and signage on July 13.
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or frisbee. The disc/frisbee is thrown from a tee to a basket, which is the “hole.” As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. The object is to throw the disc/frisbee from the tee area to the target “basket” in the fewest number of throws.
The course at Margreth Riemer Reservoir is open from sunrise to sunset daily, April 15 through October 15. All holes include Mach 3 baskets and tee markers with signs indicating hole location, distance, and par. The course is non-supervised and no reservations are needed. Bring your own disc.
On July 20, a Free Disc Golf Clinic will be held on the course. This clinic is designed for those new to disc golf tournaments or those who would like some formal instruction. The free clinic will be held on Saturday, July 20 at 4:30pm and will include instruction on basic techniques, strategies, and tournament rules. Pre-registration for the clinic is not required but those who do register in advance will receive a free Palatine Park District mini-disk.
On Sunday, July 21, the first Palatine Park District Margreth Riemer Reservoir Disc Golf Open will be held. Disc golfers of all skill levels are invited to participate in this Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) sanctioned tournament. Tournament divisions include Pro Open, Advanced, Intermediate, Recreational, Novice, and Juniors (13 and under). Cash awards will be given to the top finishers in professional divisions after two rounds of 18 holes. Prizes for top finishers will also be awarded in amateur divisions after two rounds of 18 holes. Contests and prizes will be awarded throughout the event, and pre-registered amateur players will receive a player's pack that includes one disk. The event will begin with check-in at 7:30am followed by Round 1 at 9:30am, lunch, Round 2 at 1pm, and prizes, contests and games from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Fees range from $10 to $35 depending on division and PDGA membership status. The pre-registration deadline is July 19 at 4:30pm.
