Good Shepherd's Smart Farm Open House
Barrington, IL—The Smart Farm at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital will be hosting an open house on Saturday, May 4 from 12-4 PM. If you are interested in learning more about what the Smart Farm has to offer and have a fun time doing it this event is for you.
The mission of the Smart Farm is to cultivate a healthy, eco-friendly community by:
• Offering adults and children learning opportunities in sustainable gardening;
• Promoting the benefits of sustainable gardening; and
• Donating fresh produce to support our neighbors in need.
The Smart Farm also offers a surplus of classes to help inform the community. Some of the classes offered are Seed Starting, Small Space Gardening, Tomato Plant Care, and Basic Composting. These classes will prove to be very helpful as the warmer seasons are approaching quickly. All classes are free. To sign up, please register at smartfarms.org.
Advocate Good Shepherd welcomed collaboration with the Smart Farm, and after receiving a generous grant, the Smart Farm built a three-season high-tunnel hoop house at the Advocate Good Shepherd Campus in October 2012. This almost doubled the Smart Farm's growing space.
This particular open house is committed to letting people come in and see what the Smart Farm has to offer. You can buy vegetables and plants, take part in activities, ask questions, and much more.
The Smart Farm committee also asks if anyone is interested in helping out volunteer for the open house event. We will need volunteers on both Friday and Saturday and the time will be discussed.
Volunteers will be needed for the following:
• Setting up on Friday
• Traffic
• Kids table
• Smart Farm Table
• Food and Beverage
• Seeding Sale
• Miscellaneous help
• Clean-up
