Learn to Manage Your Chronic Pain
Barrington, IL- Long-term or chronic pain affects an estimated 86 million Americans. Chronic pain can take a physical, financial, and emotional toll on pain sufferers and their family members. If you or a loved one is living with chronic pain, join us at our next event of the fall lecture series, Learn to Manage Your Chronic Pain, on Tuesday, November 20 from 6:30 – 8 PM at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 W. Highway 22 in Barrington.
The event will feature guest speaker, J. Nnaemeka Onwuta, M.D., board certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist with Advocate Medical Group. Dr. Onwuta will discuss various aspects of living with pain, its causes, as well as, management techniques and coping mechanisms.
Physical pain is complex and varies from one person to the next. According to Dr. Onwuta, “there are many treatment options for pain – medications, therapies, and mind-body techniques. Depending on the location and type of pain, you may consider using a combination of these treatments.”
Research over the past 25 years has shown that pain is influenced by emotional and social factors. These factors need to be addressed along with the physical causes of pain. Relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation are vital to managing chronic pain. If natural remedies are not enough, you may consider acupuncture, steroid injections, or medication. At the lecture, Dr. Onwuta will discuss the benefits and potential side effects of each treatment option.
