West Chicago Environmental Commission and Sims Recycling Solutions

West Chicago, Illinois: October 1, 2012 – The City of West Chicago's Environmental Commission and Sims Recycling Solutions, a global recycling company with an electronics recycling facility located in West Chicago, will be hosting a Citywide Recycling event on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Sims Recycling Solutions parking lot at 1750 Harvester Road in West Chicago from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

While West Chicago currently has one of the most inclusive weekly household recyclable collection programs in DuPage County, there are still many recyclable items that cannot be economically collected as part of this program and that are placed in trash bins throughout the city every week which end up in landfills. With this in mind, the Commission partnered with Sims to sponsor the special event.

Some examples of electronic equipment that will be collected are:

Banking Equipment, Hard Drives, Scanners/Fax Machines

CD Players, Keyboards/Mice, Servers

CD Roms, Laptop Computers, Small Household Appliances

Cell Phones, Mainframes, Stereos

Commercial Equipment, Microwaves, Switching Boxes

Computer Monitors - CRTs Modems, Tape Players

Computer Monitors - Flat Panel, Network Hubs, Telecommunications

Controllers, Office Equipment, Telephones

Copy Machines, Peripherals, Televisions - CRTs

Desktop Computers, Power & Network Cables, Televisions - Flat Screen

Docking Stations, Printed Circuit Boards, Terminals

Fax Machines, Printers, UPS (personal & network)

Gaming Consoles, Radios, VCRs

For this event, Sims Recycling Solutions will also be collecting scrap metal items such as:

Aluminum Siding, Metal Hangers, Metal Swing Sets

Brass Fittings, Metal Lawn Furniture, Toasters

Bronze Metal Light Fixtures, Water Heaters

Copper Pipe, Christmas/Holiday Lights, Household Extension Cords

The following groups will be collecting additional items for recycling:

SCARCE – Cell Phones & Accessories, Printer Cartridges (ink jet, laser, toner), Musical Instruments, Crayons, Safety Pins, Clothing Buttons, LP Records, License Plates, Eyeglasses and Keys

West Chicago Environmental Commission – Residential Fire Extinguishers, CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, CD/DVD Cases, American Flags, Non-perishable Food Donations (not beyond "best use by" date)

West Chicago Methodist Church – Shoes in good, wearable condition

West Chicago Garden Club – 4 & 6 Pack Annual Packs & Trays, 4" Annual/Perennial Pots & Trays, 1 Gallon Perennial Pots (clean & dry),

Working Bikes – Bicycles, Sewing Machines, Walkers, Crutches and Wheelchairs (in any

condition)

4 Paws Animal Shelter - Dog Kennels, Dog Cages, Dog Car Carriers, Dog Play Pens, Towels, Bleach, Paper Towels

St. Vincent DePaul - all kinds of Clothing, Winter Coats & Gloves, Linens, Blankets & Bed Spreads, Purses, Belts, Household Items (including Kitchenware), Small Appliances (in working order), Knick-knacks, Crafts,Jjewelry & Computers

Accurate Document Destruction On-site Paper Shredding Service - Materials to be shredded should include primarily Paper and Manila File Folders. There is no need to remove staples, paper clips, binder clips or rubber bands. No Limit has been set at this time. Please note: binders, plastic, cardboard, tapes or any other large non-paper products cannot be shredded with the on-site service. These products contaminate the recycling process and inhibit the operation of the onsite shredding machinery.

Unacceptable Items:

Only materials accepted by the participating businesses, groups and organizations will be collected at this event. Hazardous and other non-accepted materials will not be allowed to be dropped off at the event. More specifically, items that may contain refrigerant, radioactive material, Mercury, gasoline or oil will not be collected. Information on the proper disposal of these items will be available at the event. Some examples of items that will not be collected are:

Air conditioners (may contain refrigerant)

Light bulbs – CFL/Fluorescent (contain Mercury)

Freezers (may contain refrigerant) Light bulbs - Incandescent

Gas powered engines (may contain oil/gas) Smoke alarms (contain Radioactive material)

Household/Lead-Acid Batteries Thermometers (may contain Mercury)

Refrigerators (may contain refrigerant)

Thermostats (may contain Mercury)

Light bulbs - HID (contain Mercury)
