Tom Cullerton launches petition to support seniors

VILLA PARK- State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) launched a petition to allow area residents to voice their support for Senate Resolution 1325, which stands up against taxing the retirement income of Illinois' retirees.

Older Illinoisans currently struggle to make ends meet on fixed incomes as Social Security remains the primary source of income for one out of five retired Illinoisans.

"We need to look for ways for our seniors to lead independent lives, not take opportunities away," Cullerton said.

Cullerton believes taxing seniors' retirement income will make it harder for older retirees to pay for basic necessities, including food, utility bills and essential medical costs.

He plans on presenting the petition to the governor and Senate leadership.

As the budget impasse continues, crucial community programs such as Meals on Wheels have already cut meal services to seniors across DuPage County.

"We can't afford to balance the budget on our seniors' retirement income," Cullerton said.

Cullerton is asking for area residents to visit www.SenatorTomCullerton.com to sign his petition and share their stories.
