Growing 4-H Robotics 2013 Unit 5 Tournament

got robot? FTC Team 5037 4-H SPIN Club is hosting a regional robotics competition, “Growing 4-H Robotics 2013 Unit 5 Stormbot Tournament,” on Saturday, March 16, at Bryan Middle School, 111 W. Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. Twenty-one teams comprised of 4-H members from throughout Kane, Kendall, and DuPage counties will be competing. Six teams of students from Abbott Middle School in Elgin will be participating under the direction of Head Coach Anne Herrmann, a teacher at Abbott.

FIRST Robotics Teams; The Moovers FLL team 9885 of Kildeer, Ocotpi FTC team 6007 of Crystal Lake, and got robot? FTC 5037 team of Elgin, will be demonstrating from 11:30-12:30 p.m. The competition runs from 1:00-4:30 p.m. and awards will be presented from 4:30-5 p.m.

Each team must design their own competition mat and obstacles, as well as build and program their robot to fit the scenario that a natural disaster has passed through town, causing severe damage and debris. The robot must autonomously clear debris, avoid obstacles, and construct a protective barrier for the remaining building. Some of the awards given will be for robot performance, engineering, programming, creativity, and team work.

This local tournament is a practice scrimmage leading up the Illinois 4-H State Robotics Competition held on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign on April 20, 2013. All teams are eligible to advance to the state competition.

The Growing 4-H Robotics 2013 Unit 5 Stormbot Tournament is funded by a grant provided by Altria. The Altria grant also provided for twelve new Unit 5 4-H Robotics Special Interest (SPIN) Clubs in with equipment and leader support.

After winning the prestigious Inspire Aware at the Illinois State FTC tournament in December 2012, got robot? FTC Team 5037 will be representing Illinois this April 24-27 at the 2013 FTC World Championship in St. Louis, Mo.

got robot? will be selling concessions at the Growing 4-H Robotics Tournament to support their fundraising campaign to get their team to Worlds.
