COD Faculty Member Named Next Generation Indie Book Finalist
College of DuPage Assistant English Professor Trina Sotirakopulos recently was named one of five finalists for the 2016 Next Generation Indie Book Awards during a ceremony held recently at the Newberry Library in Chicago.
Sotirakopulos and her co-editor Michelle Duster were honored in the Women's Issues category for their work, "Shifts: An Anthology of Women's Growth Through Change" (for which she is credited as Trina Sotira). The anthology, which also was a 2015 USA Best Book Awards finalist, features poems, short stories and essays by 35 women from various backgrounds, highlighting their strength and growth through life changes, including divorce, parenthood, job situations and loss.
"There's a sense that even if we've never met, we, as women, are one community that has common experiences," Sotirakopulos said.
A former television news producer, Sotirakopulos is an assistant professor of fiction writing, creative writing and composition. She writes stories for young adults, publishes articles on writing and is a conference presenter. Her first novel, "In Her Skin: Growing Up Trans," received recognition for revealing the struggles of a transgender teen.
