Rail Disaster: Could it Happen Here? April 3, 7 pm, Lincolnshire
No one wants to hear about the possibility of major train explosions in our communities, but public awareness is needed to advocate for safer railroad rules, policies, and procedures. Railroad Workers United is hosting a presentation and book signing on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at 7 pm at the UAW Union Hall, 680 Barclay Blvd., Lincolnshire, to raise awareness of train disasters. Bruce Campbell, author of The Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster: Public Betrayal, Justice Denied, will be speaking about one of the deadliest railway disasters in Canadian history. The July 6, 2013 Lac-Mégantic rail disaster resulted in major loss of life, massive environmental destruction, and the evisceration of a small Quebec town. Lac-Mégantic is the story of a rail industry writing its own rules and a booming US oil industry based on fracking, fighting any obstacles to selling their dangerous product. Members of Railroad Workers United will share their stories regarding their unsafe working conditions, and Gerri Songer, local activist, will discuss the local impact. Books will be available for purchase. Free and open to the public.
