Creative Writing Committee Seeking Submissions for 'Emerging Voices' Writing Contest

The Creative Writing Committee at COD is seeking submissions for the "Emerging Voices" writing contest.

Open to all residents of Illinois, this contest is part of the "Writers Read" series, which brings area authors to COD's campus for readings and discussions.

To enter, participants should submit their writing in the form of short stories, novels excerpts, creative nonfiction or poetry electronically via email to writersread@cod.edu. Contest winners will receive cash prizes and first place entries will be published in the print version of the Prairie Light Review, the College's award-winning juried literary magazine. Additional winning entries will be published online.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 10.

The College of DuPage will host the winning authors showcase at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, in the Student Resource Center, Room 2000, on the College's Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

This event is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the College's Academic Affairs office, Creative Writing Committee and Liberal Arts Division, the showcase will feature guest author Erika Sánchez who will read and discuss her work.

Chicago-based essayist, novelist and poet Sánchez has been a Fulbright Scholar and is a winner of both the 2015 Ruth Lily and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship and the 2013 Discovery/Boston Review Prize.

She has been a sex and love advice columnist for Cosmopolitan for Latinas and is a journalist whose work has been published in a variety of publications, including Al Jazeera, BuzzFeed, The Guardian, Jezebel, NBC News, Rolling Stone and Salon. Her poetry collection, "Lessons on Expulsion" (Graywolf), will be released in July 2017 and her Young Adult novel "Brown Girl Problems" (Knopf Books for Young Readers) will be released in fall 2017.

For the last 18 years the Writers Read series has brought dozens of nationally acclaimed writers to College of DuPage.
