COD to Host STEMinar Series: Dr. Christina Dunbar-Hester

College of DuPage will host Dr. Christina Dunbar-Hester, Ph.D., for her talk: "Low Power to the People! Media Activism, DIY and the Challenge of Democratic Technology" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17, in the Health and Science Center, Room 1234, on the College's Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

This event is free and open to the public.

During the seminar, Dunbar-Hester will discuss the last century of broadcast policy, including activism to expand non-commercial media since the Telecommunications Act of 1996, as well as the activities of advocates for low-power FM radio, limited-range community-based outlets that broadcast to local areas within neighborhoods and small towns throughout the U.S.

Dunbar-Hester is an ethnographer who studies the intersection of technical practice and political engagement. She has a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies from Cornell University, and is the author of the book "Low Power to the People: Pirates, Protest, and Politics in FM Radio Activism" (MIT Press, 2014).

Currently an assistant professor teaching in the Ph.D. Communications program at the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Andrew J. Mellon Humanities Project, the Virtual Knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology & Society.
