COD Forensics Team Begins 2016-2017 Season With Team and Individual Wins

The College of DuPage Forensics Team earned team and individual awards as it begins the 2016-2017 winter season.

The team competed against other community colleges and four-year institutions at Northern Illinois University during the 2016 M. Jack Parker Debate tournament. The first parliamentary debate tournament of the season, the COD teams reached the finals in both the first-year "Novice" division and the four-year "Open" division. Harris Salim (Woodridge) and Gabbi Gruver (Naperville) were awarded second place in the Novice Parliamentary Division. Additional COD competitors included Katrina Caluza (Aurora) and Liz Fritz (Naperville).

The team also traveled to North Central College Oct. 7 to compete in the first Lincoln Parliamentary Debate League tournament. Harris Salim and Liz Fritz (Naperville) earned fifth place in the final bronze round. Additional COD team members included Emma Swanson (Wood Dale) and Gabbi Gruver.

The team continued their success on Oct. 8, placing second at the Apple Quest tournament at Moraine Valley College. The Apple Quest tournament brings together teams from community colleges and four-year institutions from across the state in head-to-head individual events competition.

The following team members placed during the competition: Kelsey Neumann: (Glen Ellyn), first place in Communication Analysis; Harris Salim, fourth place in Extemporaneous Speaking and third place in Impromptu Speaking; Jake Cowart (Lombard), fourth place in Persuasion; Hamdan Suhail (Woodridge), sixth place in Inner-Squad-Improvisational-Speaking (Open Division); and Ryan Almer (Wheaton), first place in Inner-Squad-Improvisational-Speaking (Open Division)

Also competing were Liz Kolze (Wood Dale), Mojeri Coker (Warrenville), Katrina Caluza (Aurora), Emma Swanson, Lena Andersen (Glen Ellyn), Cem Addemir (Naperville) and Veronica Williams.

The College of DuPage Forensics Team is coached by Lauren Morgan, Jude Geiger, Melissa Gomez, Mia Poston, Matt Beifuss and Kelsey Figiel.
