Generous donation to fund 975 days of cancer research for area nonprofit
The Gateway for Cancer Research, a Schaumburg-based nonprofit organization that funds cancer clinical trials across the world, has received a generous donation in the amount of $25,106 from long-time supporter Rick Horton on behalf of his unique and energizing fundraising charity, Cancer Sucks.
Gateway funds research for all types of cancer, and the donation from Cancer Sucks will specifically support innovative clinical trials addressing blood, brain, breast, colon, lung and prostate cancers. With these clinical trials needing an average daily cost of $25.75, the gift from Cancer Sucks will help truly make a difference by funding approximately 975 days of cancer research.
“We are so very thankful for Rick Horton’s support, and for the generosity of Caner Sucks supporters,” said Karen Kay, director of development at the Gateway for Cancer Research. “Every dollar we receive matters, and every day of research counts. A donation of this size can impact lives and is incredibly meaningful for cancer patients who may have few treatment options.”
The donation was made through Gateway’s Fund-A-Day program, which gives supporters like Rick Horton an opportunity to specifically fund one or more days of cancer research. By visiting the Fund-A-Calendar at www.DemandCuresToday.org, individuals can choose any day of the year that has meaning to them and leave a message about why the day is special, or an inspirational note. Whether donors help to fund one day or 975 days, each contribution truly makes a difference for patients participating in a Gateway-funded cancer clinical trial.
This is not the first time Gateway has been the recipient of a donation from Cancer Sucks. In recent years, the two nonprofits have developed a close relationship and are together rallying more people around the need to fund cancer research innovations that can save lives and cure cancer. To date, Cancer Sucks has generously donated more than $250,000 to Gateway in honor of Horton’s mother, Donna Holland White, who passed away from cancer in 1996.
Since 1991, Gateway has provided essential funding resources to more than 120 cancer clinical trials that restore hope and offer new treatment opportunities to cancer patients everywhere. With every donation received, Gateway commits 99 cents of every dollar directly to the cancer research it supports, which is made possible by generous underwriting of Gateway’s administrative expenses by Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
For 15 years, Cancer Sucks has had tremendous success raising money for a cure through non-traditional fundraising events. The $25,106 donation to Gateway comes from the proceeds of Cancer Sucks’ Handlebars and Hotrods poker ride event and heavy metal concert held earlier this year in Tulsa, Okla. More than 1,000 people attended the two events.
"It's definitely not your traditional way of fundraising and I'm sure we raise a few eyebrows, but you won't find a more dedicated and supportive group of people who are willing to do what it takes to make it happen,” said Rick Horton of Cancer Sucks.
The next fundraiser for Cancer Sucks is an annual rock concert held Nov. 30 at The Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, Okla. Performing at the event will be Aranda and We The Ghost. All proceeds will be donated to Gateway in memory of Tulsa radio personality Jan Dean. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.CainsBallroom.com.
