Local chorus Hawaii bound, shares international sneak peek

The Choral-Aires Chorus, a Sweet Adelines International medaling chorus, invites community members to enjoy pure barbershop music in a show titled, “Hawaii Bound!” The show features the Chorus and top Regional qualifying quartets performing the show packages to be presented at the Sweet Adelines International Convention in Honolulu, November 4 - 9. “Hawaii Bound!” is at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, October 20, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church (149 West Brush Hill Road, Elmhurst).

Tickets cost $10 for children ages 6 – 16 and seniors over 62, $15 for adults (ages 17 – 61), and kids 5 and under are free. They may be purchased on the Chorus website at http://choral-aires.com, or by contacting Sherry at 847.648.3333 or sparker52@sbcglobal.net.

The Chorus earned participation in the international competition after taking the Lake Michigan Region 3 championship in 2012. Since that time, members of the Chorus have spent more than 200 hours rehearsing and refining their songs for the international stage.

Chorus President Nancy Smith says of the show, “The ladies of the Chorus have put their hearts and souls into these competition songs, embracing much change through the course of this past year. Our co-directors, Bonnie Fedyski and Amy Brinkman have brought out the best in each of us individually and as a cohesive unit. Through it all, the energy and enthusiasm shown by the women of the Chorus is absolutely unmatched. We all look forward to performing these songs for a local audience of family and friends before the International Convention.”

At the convention, all competing choruses will be judged in four categories: music, sound, expression and showmanship. All music is performed barbershop-style (or a cappella). More than 100 women from Illinois and Wisconsin sing tight harmonies a cappella (without instrumentation) with the Choral-Aires Chorus, a Sweet Adelines International medaling chorus, and the 2012 Lake Michigan Region 3 Champion. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. More information about the Chorus can be found at their website, http://choral-aires.com.
