Judson hosts fall lecture, exhibition series

(Elgin, IL - September 20, 2011) The Judson University School of Art, Design and Architecture has announced its fall schedule for the annual Lecture and Exhibition Series.

The Fall 2011 series began with a lecture from Gordon Gill of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects on Thursday, Sept. 8, an event that coincided with the launch of the Department of Architecture's inaugural fall symposium. Gill discussed opportunities and challenges for American architects in the Chinese market. As part of the fall architectural symposium, the Department of Architecture hosted an all-day event of lectures on September 9, which focused on architecture and urbanism in China. The symposium heard from a variety of Chicago practitioners as well as Beijing University School of Civil Engineering and Architecture Dean Linan Liu.

The first exhibition of the fall lecture series, "Homecoming," showcases student work from their spring 2011 European study tour. The exhibit opened on Monday, September 12 and will conclude with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 1.

A new exhibit will feature the Civa Codex VII Block Print, beginning Monday, October 3 and ending on Friday, October 28.

In conjunction with Judson University Ministries, storyteller, photographer and traveler Lane Davis will give a lecture at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 6 in Room 221 of the Harm A. Weber Academic Center. Davis' lecture will focus on his creative media production house, TOTELLASTORY, which specializes in visual storytelling.

Visual artist Karen Brummund will give a lecture at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7 in Herrick Chapel. Brummund's will share her interdisciplinary work with communities, architects and economists.

From November 1-23, the Details and Dwellings Exhibition will be open in the Draewell Gallery of the Harm A. Weber Academic Center. This is the City of Elgin's sixth annual "Elgin 1440" Community Photography Event and Exhibit. To be eligible for the exhibit, all contestants were required to submit a photograph taken between 12:00 a.m. and 11:50 p.m. on September 10, 2011, allowing only 1,440 minutes for them to capture the perfect shot. The event has been made possible by the City of Elgin, The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission, and the Daily Herald. A reception for the exhibition will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on November 4 in the Draewell Gallery.

A lecture led by urban designer Vinayak Bharne will be held at 4:30 p.m. on November 11 in Herrick Chapel. Bharne, based in Los Angeles, Calif., focuses on comparative urban forms and types, trans-national urbanism, smart growth and contemporary methods of urban design practice.

The fall lecture and exhibition series will conclude with the senior thesis exhibition, open from December 3-10 in the Harm A. Weber Academic Center Third Floor Exhibition Space, with a reception on December 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. A schedule for the spring lecture and exhibition series will be announced in December.
