Students, parents can explore science opportunities at BenU open house
Why does the College of Science at Benedictine University enjoy the reputation it does?
Is it because our alumni, like Advocate Christ Medical Center resident and University of Illinois medical school graduate Michael T. Stanek (B.S. Biology/Chemistry, 2010), and Muzamil Arshad (B.S. Physics, 2010), an M.D./Ph.D. candidate at Wayne State University School of Medicine, matriculate to some of the top graduate and medical schools throughout the country?
Maybe it's our award-winning faculty, like former chair of Biological Sciences Allison K. Wilson, Ph.D., who was presented the Distinguished Faculty Award for her work in securing a $1.2 million Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Grant from the National Science Foundation?
Or perhaps it Benedictine's historically deep ties to the regional science and technology community which create opportunities for students to obtain research internships in local industry or government labs?
High school and transfer students who are interested in science and want to learn how the College of Science at Benedictine University can help prepare them for exciting and rewarding careers should attend the College of Science Open House from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, in the lobby of Goodwin Hall.
The open house provides students and their parents with the opportunity to meet with University faculty and staff members to discuss Benedictine's academic programs, admissions requirements, application process, available scholarships and financial aid. Customized tours of campus and the Birck Hall of Science, a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility, will also be provided.
Benedictine University's College of Science offers undergraduate programs in Biology, Environmental Science, Health Science, Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Science, The College also has institutional agreements with a number of leading medical centers in the Chicago area that would provide the required clinical experience for students seeking to obtain degrees in Clinical Laboratory Science, Clinical Life Science (Perfusion Technology and Respiratory Care), Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Nuclear Medicine Technology and Radiation Therapy.
Benedictine also offers pre-professional programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Optometry, Veterinary Medicine, Podiatry, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy to supplement students' experiences within their major of choice.
The College of Science provides unique opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in summer research projects and internships, which includes Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the Field Museum of Natural History. These experiences allow students to gain expertise in a lab setting, expand their understanding of classroom work and enhance their resumes.
An informational breakfast will be held before the event for students interested in our University Scholars Program, which offers academically talented students special opportunities to develop their skills as thinkers, readers and writers through a coordinated program of seminar-style coursework that emphasizes discussion and debate. The breakfast will also showcase the new Jurica Scholars Program, beginning in Fall 2016, for talented and curious students majoring within the Department of Biological Sciences.
The breakfast will begin promptly at 10:15 a.m. on the fourth floor of Goodwin Hall. Requirements for the Scholars Program include a minimum ACT score of 27 or SAT score of 1210, two years of a foreign language (for the Scholars Program) and a cumulative GPA of 3.75/4.0.
