Palatine Concert Band opens season Nov. 10 at Cutting Hall

The Palatine Concert Band is excited to announce the opening of its 2013-2014 concert season. The band's first concert of the season is Sunday November 10, 2013 at 3:30 pm in Cutting Hall, 250 East Wood Street in Palatine. This concert is also the debut performance of newly selected band director, Dr. Frederick (Rick) Lowe. Dr. Lowe is the currently director of ensembles at Loyola University Chicago, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and basketball pep band, and also teaches a course introducing the art of music listening.

Dr. Lowe earned his bachelor of music degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then served as the assistant band director at Lake Zurich (IL) High School, where he directed the Concert, Symphonic and Marching bands and taught music theory and electronic music composition. Upon leaving Lake Zurich, he earned his master and doctor of music degrees in conducting at Northwestern University, studying with primary teacher Dr. Mallory Thompson. While at Northwestern, Dr. Lowe guest conducted the Contemporary Music Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The Band will feature a number of selections from both new tunes and classic band literature. Our selections will include: Be Glad Then America, When Jesus Wept, and Chester – originally entitled New England Triptych (William Schuman); Huldigungsmarsch, (R. Wagner); Elegy for a Young American, (Lo Presti), Polka and Fugue, (Weinberger), Molly on the Shore (Grainger), and Nocturne (Scriabin).

Comprised of volunteer, adult musicians, the Palatine Concert Band maintains an active performance schedule year-round. The band was founded in 1875, and revived in 1955.
