Girl Scouts Partner with NIU Seeking Future Female Engineers

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is partnering with Northern Illinois University (NIU) to offer Saturday Engineering Workshops (SEW) and summer camp for girls in grades 6, 7, and 8, at its Naperville campus beginning November 2, 2013. The series culminates with a week-long summer camp the week of June 16–20, 2014.

SEW workshops challenge girls to sharpen their math, science and technology skills as they discover engineering. Participants will work in small groups assisted by female faculty and engineering undergraduates from NIU, along with high school mentors on various engineering projects. Girls will build electrical circuits that create sound, work on motion and light projects, experiment with bridge-building, and experience chemical engineering and lean simulation. This event provides girls with a skilled mentoring community to develop the next generation of scientists and engineers!

Interested applicants will need to fill out a program application and produce a letter of recommendation along with a copy of their last quarter report card by Monday, October 7, 2013. Applicants will then be notified by NIU staff the week of October 21, 2013.
