Sign up for June 9 Walk to End Lupus Now-Chicago at Montrose Harbor

The Chicago area community will gather next month to be part of a movement to end lupus. The Walk to End Lupus Now Chicago will take place Sunday, June 9, at Montrose Harbor.

The event will be emceed by Fox 32 Chicago anchor and reporter Natalie Bomke.

Lupus has no known cause and no known cure, but affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide.

Recently, lupus was found to be a leading cause of death among young women.

Despite its widespread prevalence, lupus research funding and awareness of its brutal impact remains low.

The Lupus Foundation of America's Walk to End Lupus Now events are the largest lupus walk program in the world.

It brings communities together to raise money for lupus research, increase awareness of the disease and rally public support for those who suffer from its brutal impact.

The walk will celebrate the theme "Be Powerful," as each walk recognizes the strength of those affected by lupus and the power their communities have in supporting lupus awareness, research and resources.

"This walk is an excellent opportunity for Chicago and communities to come together for one mission - to end lupus," said Stevan W. Gibson, president and CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America.

"It's not just an event, it's a time for lupus warriors, family members and supporters throughout Chicago to support each other and be powerful while elevating lupus awareness and raising critical funds for lupus research," Gibson continued.

"As a first-time walker participating in the Chicago Walk to End Lupus Now, I am walking to raise awareness and one day put an end to lupus," said Michele Worth, Chicago walk team captain. "I am excited to take part in this event on behalf of my daughter Rachel, who was recently diagnosed with lupus.

"We walk in support of all those who suffer from this cruel and mysterious disease, knowing that the money we raise will help find a cure!"

Every step taken and every dollar raised at the Walk to End Lupus Now brings us closer to solving the mystery of lupus.

Check-in begins at 9 a.m. with the ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the 1-mile walk at 10:30 a.m.

Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body.

It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, strikes without warning, and has no known cause and no known cure.

Its health effects can range from a skin rash to a heart attack. Lupus is debilitating and destructive and can be fatal, yet research on lupus remains underfunded relative to diseases of similar scope and devastation.

The Lupus Foundation of America is the only national force devoted to solving the mystery of lupus, one of the most unpredictable and devastating diseases, while giving caring support to those who suffer from its impact.

Through a comprehensive program of research, education, and advocacy, the foundation leads the fight to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus.
