Suburban teams advance in state dance competition

Suburban high schools are well-represented among the 30 competitive dance teams heading into the IHSA’s first state championships on Saturday in Bloomington.

Ninety schools competed Friday, but only one-third of them are alive going into the finals.

The IHSA is presenting its first championship series in competitive dance, with a unique format — instead of each type of dance competing in its own category, each school will perform the style of dance it most excels at — be it lyrical, pom, jazz, hip hop, kick or flags.

The schools in Division 3A going into the finals, with scores between 97.44 and 78.72, are: Stevenson, Maine South, Warren, Neuqua Valley, Glenbrook South, Mundelein, Downers Grove South, Larkin, Sandburg in Orland Park and downstate O’Fallon.

The schools in Division 2A going into the finals, with scores between 90.84 and 74.16, are: Highland, Lake Forest, Crystal Lake Central, Morris, Eisenhower in Blue Island, Deerfield, Grayslake North, Vernon Hills, Lincoln-Way West and Triad in downstate Troy.

Among the small schools in Division 1A, no suburban schools advanced to Saturday’s finals. Aurora Central Catholic came closest with 63.56 points. Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst had 62.34 points, and Lisle had 48.28 points.

The 10 Division 1A schools going into the finals, with scores between 76.74 and 65.50, are: Civic Memorial in Bethalto, Rochelle, Metro East Lutheran in Edwardsville, Casey-Westfield, Murphysboro, Peotone, St. Anthony in Effingham, Pinckneyville, Streator Township and Fieldcrest in Minonk.
