    Two of the largest school districts in Kane County have opposite problems in the spring election: either too many candidates or too few. Elgin Area School District U-46 takes the lead with eleven candidates, including two incumbents vying for four 4-year terms on the school board in the April 7 election. Hampshire-based Community Unit District 300 is one candidate shy with just three candidates for four 2-year seats available.

    Bartlett police are considering criminal charges against two Bartlett High School students who hacked into an Elgin Area District U-46 online portal and changed student attendance records, officials said Friday. “One account being hacked into is one too many,” said John Heiderscheidt, the district’s coordinator of safety and security. “We’re taking every precaution we can.”

    Elgin Area School District U-46 and Hampshire-based Community Unit District 300 are among 26 statewide recipients of $80 million in federal funding for early childhood education programs. More than $226 million in Preschool Development Grants was awarded to schools in 18 states. The grants will serve more than 33,000 children nationwide.

    A plan to teach students about energy management and green housing while helping homeowners earned Streamwood High School the top stop in Illinois in a nationwide contest. Teacher Matt Erbach submitted the winning lesson plan for Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow contest, which means the school will receive $20,000 worth of technology for students. “It’s exposure to the real world, “ Erbach said. “I want to make it real for them."

    "I've always enjoyed cooking," said Carl Flaks of Elgin, a longtime volunteer at First Congregational Church of Elgin's Soup Kettle. Flaks, a retired teacher, said the hours he puts into organizing and cooking for the weekly meal are his way of giving back to the community he loves.

  • South Elgin students march in solidarity with Ferguson, Mo. Dec 4, 2014 4:06 PM
    About 350 South Elgin High School students organized a march Thursday in solidarity with “Black Lives Matter” — a national movement advocating equal treatment of minorities by law enforcement. The students’ march was prompted by the Aug. 9 police shooting death of an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri.
