Advocate Condell Medical Center is offering free community education programs and discounted health screenings this February to raise awareness of heart health issues during American Heart Month.

The programs include heart-health screenings and counseling, a heart-healthy cooking demonstration and a lecture with a leading cardiologist. They offer a chance to get updated information and interact with physicians and other medical professionals. Giveaways and refreshments also will be available. Registration is required for all programs by calling Health Advisor at (800) 323-8622.

The series kicks off with "Know Your Numbers" heart screenings. Assess your current health numbers for blood pressure, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol, glucose and BMI. Then, meet with our clinical staff to discuss your test results. You must fast for at least 8 hours prior to your screening appointment.

Screenings are being offered from 7-11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Advocate Condell Medical Center's Gurnee Centre Club, 1405 N. Hunt Club Road; and Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Advocate Condell Medical Center's Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave. in Libertyville.

The cost is $20. The registration code for this program is 5C18.

Other programs include:

• "Heart Healthy Cooking Demonstration," from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, in the hospital's West Tower, 801 S. Milwaukee Ave. in Libertyville. Healthy food can taste good! Whether you have diabetes, need to lose weight or just want to improve your health, this program will give tips on how to choose healthy foods and prepare them in a way that will leave you wanting more. Our dedicated diabetes educator and dietician will talk about the importance of a heart-healthy diet while our guest chef prepares samples to taste.
