Northwest Choral Society to present 'Shout!' June 9-10

The Northwest Choral Society, under the direction of artistic director Alan Wellman, will present its next concerts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Des Plaines, and 4 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Mt. Prospect.

The concert will feature many popular musical selections from the 1960s. At the height of the civil rights movement, Motown Records was established as a black-owned recording studio in Detroit, Mich.

A sign over the door read "Hitsville, USA." Detroit was quickly established as the factory town where the Big Three produced automobiles and Motown assembled mainstream American music that spanned the emotional gamut.

Motown hits by Marvin Gaye, John Fogerty and Smokey Robinson are on the "SHOUT!" program, along with music of the Temptations, the Supremes and the Jackson 5. The era would not be complete without songs by the Beatles. The concert will include a medley of Grammy nominated songs from the Fab Four. With additional music of Tina Turner, Neil Diamond, and Aretha Franklin, this concert will be sure to make you want to dance!

A complimentary preconcert lecture and discussion of the music will be hosted by chorus member John Morrison 45 minutes prior to each concert.

Tickets for the "SHOUT!" concerts are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors and may be obtained online at www.nwchoralsociety.org, by calling (224) 585-9127 or the day of the concert at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 766 Graceland Avenue, Des Plaines, on Saturday, June 9 and at Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 West Golf Road, Mt. Prospect, on Sunday, June 10.
