Antioch powers to Class 2A title at Lakes

Kenneth Strohman and Julio Ramirez captured individual championships at 152 and 195 pounds, respectively, as Antioch won the Class 2A Lakes regional Saturday.

The Sequoits' 163 points were comfortably ahead of runner-up Vernon Hills (149.5) and third-place Carmel Catholic (145.5).

Antioch's other sectional qualifiers were Briley Schultz (second, 106 pounds), Nathan Dlugopolski (third, 113), Grant Smith (third, 120), Chris Ruth (second, 126), Mike Gussarson (second, 132), Johnny Denikas (second, 138), Tyler Stephens (fourth, 145) and Kyle Nichols (second, 285).

Runner-up Vernon Hills got through first-place finishers Jordan Reich (106), Brae Cruz (126) and David Pierce (145), and Peter Vanderbloomer (second, 113), Filipe Vazquez (fourth 132), Ben Turley (fourth, 152), Jacob Hallendorff (fourth, 170), Zach Eckstrom (second, 182), Roger Ramirez (second, 195) and Joe Blitstein (third, 285).

Third-place Carmel boasted champions Kenny Barber (113), Jake Morgan (120) and Jake Cochrane (285), who improved to 37-1. Other Corsairs who advanced were Brodie Palm (third, 106), Jake Drennan (fourth, 126), Nathaniel Morris (third, 138), Jimmy Dandino (third, 160) and Mike Falger (third, 170).

Lakes (fourth, 131) was led by runners-up Kavan Mulloy (145), David Gregory (160) and Jared Smith (170). Other Eagles extending their seasons were Dakota Larson (third, 152), Sam Callahan (third, 126), Levi Smith (third, 132), Cody Stanley (fourth, 113), Tyler Fuller (fourth, 182) and Austin Summers (third, 195).

Wauconda (fifth, 119) had four champs in Devin Tortorice (132), Alex Schwickrath (170), Josh Conour (182) and Nate Magiera (220), whose pin in 50 seconds in the finals hiked his record to 31-0.

Other wrestlers who won championships included Grayslake Central's Jonathan Makey (138) and North Chicago's Gerard Wade (160).
