Local schools fare well in U.S. News rankings

Twelve Northwest suburban public high schools were ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its annual list of best high schools. Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire was ranked 6th in Illinois and 33rd in the nation. Prospect High School is ninth in Illinois and 295th in the nation. The other local schools are John Hersey, 10th and 298th; William Fremd, 22nd and 540th; Barrington, 24th and 572nd; James B. Conant, 26th and 615th; Hoffman Estates, 28th and 640th; Wheeling, 30th and 817th; Lake Zurich, 41st and 1,015th; Elk Grove, 43rd and 1,046th; Schaumburg, 45th and 1101st; and Elgin, 56th and 1776th. Rankings are based on test scores, state assessments and college-level coursework, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs.
