Woodlands Academy inducts 14 students into Spanish Honor Society

Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart celebrated 14 students being inducted into the Spanish Honor Society April 16.

Students and their home towns include: Janay Allen, North Chicago; Isabella Alvarez, Lake Forest; Bridget Bourbon, Riverwoods; Jeana Brickner, Lake Forest; Hannah Carlson, Lake Forest; Stephanie Corea, Waukegan; Manasa Datla, Long Grove; Alexis Gonzalez, Waukegan; Amanda Hermsen, Gurnee; Sarah Hindman, Lake Bluff; Anne-Marie Kommers, Lake Bluff; Emma Rodriguez, Beach Park; Jessica Tranter, Brooklyn, NY and Alexandra Vela, Waukegan.

The Woodlands Academy chapter, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, was established in 2002, and is named for a 17th century Mexican nun who is considered one of the most significant writers in the history of Spanish literature.

During the ceremony, Spanish teacher Amy Perlick had each student light a small candle from a larger, stationary one. “This typifies our course of life. Thus, without burning, the candle exists but does not live. That candle is saying, ‘If they burn me, I live; if not, I die.' May our lives never be candles unburned.”
