Saturday's Fox Valley roundup

The Hampshire baseball team had its bats going on Saturday, sweeping a Big Northern Conference crossover doubleheader from Oregon by scores of 13-2 and 10-7.

Hampshire 13, Oregon 2: The Whip-Purs were hot on offense as they recorded 13 hits in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Oregon to earn the victory. Ron Laramie went 2-for-2, recording 2 doubles and scoring 3 runs. Ryan DeChant (2B) and Cameron Waterworth (RBI) each went 2-for-3. Luke Wians (3-0) remained undefeated on the mound as he gave up 3 hits while striking out 7 in 5 innings of work.

Hampshire 10, Oregon 7: Freshman Shane Hernandez (1-0) earned his first varsity win as he pitched 5 innings, gave up 3 earned runs, scattered 9 hits, and struck out 4 as the Whip-Purs (10-7) completed their sweep of Oregon. Nick Holze tallied 2 doubles, an RBI, and scored 3 runs while Max Shaw added 2 hits and a run scored.

Crystal Lake South 7, Woodstock North 2: The Gators (11-8, 8-4) jumped ahead early and never looked back as they defeated the Thunder in Fox Valley Conference play. Greg Pagnotta paced the Gators offensively with a 3-for-4 effort from the plate, 2 RBI, and a double while Ryan Price went 2-for-3 with an RBI, double, and a run scored. Mike Benson (2-1) earned the complete-game victory on the mound as he scattered 7 hits and struck out 7.

Westminster Christian 6, Kaneland 5: The Warriors (14-6) took advantage of a few Kaneland errors to score 6 runs in the fourth inning which would be all they would need to come away with a nonconference victory on the road. Ryan Perez was the only Warrior to record a multihit game with 2 singles while Frank Oliver and Ben Stevenson added an RBI each. Kevin Elder earned the victory as he pitched the final 5 innings, giving up just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 7.

Grayslake North 8, Cary-Grove 7: The Trojans' comeback effort fell just short as they were defeated in Fox Valley Conference action by visiting Grayslake North. Tyler Curran suffered the loss as he threw 11/3 innings, allowing 4 runs and 4 walks while striking out 1. Eric Chandler (2B), Mike Vilardo (2B), and Chris Waylock (3B) led the Trojans (12-8, 8-4) offensively.

Grayslake Central 5, Huntley 0: The Red Raiders (14-4, 8-3) could not get their offense going as they fell in this 6 inning, weather shortened, Fox Valley Conference matchup against Grayslake Central. Andre Sopena led the Red Raiders with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and a stolen base. Jake Staab (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 12/3 innings pitched.
