Stone Soup - A Supportive Community

Stone Soup …. A supportive community

When my children were little, we enjoyed reading the story called "Stone Soup." It's a delightful old French children's story about three soldiers who came marching down the road and into a village. The peasants seeing them suddenly became fearful and very busy, for the soldiers were hungry. The foods were all hidden in barns or under mattresses. They had nothing to offer the soldiers. Being creative - the soldiers asked for a big pot, built a fire under it and told the village people that they were going to make stone soup, enough to feed all. Curious about the soldier's optimism, little by little, the village people brought an assortment of vegetables, meat, potatoes, etc to add to the stones. The evening turned into a festival of dancing and singing.

I have remembered "Stone Soup" and a few other favorite children's stories over the years. As an artist my mind tends to wander. I have thought about "Stone Soup" often as I make plans for a very important event. I am hosting a gourmet dinner with wine pairings, entertainment and fun at D&J Bistro October 5th, 2014 at 5pm. I have been asked to be on the Advisory Board of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. This is my first event to host. My imagination slides over to the soldiers who the village people looked upon as very unwelcomed visitors to their community. Cancer is very unwelcomed. It is an obnoxious, intrusive, destructive, unwanted invader in our lives and we desperately want to see it eliminated from our world. As a cancer survivor, I know the fear, aprrehenencion, and pain it brings. But I also have felt the love and support from faith, friends, family and medical professionals through the difficult months of treatment. As I go about our community, I am receiving amazing support to help me with our event to win over cancer. Instead of cabbages, carrots, meats, etc like the village people gave to make the soup, I am finding support from businesses, family and friends and even my art group. When I ask for a silent auction item, it comes with a smile and generous support. Several from my art group and neighborhood will be modeling Irish attire from Irish Imports of Geneva at dinner intervals. Salon 530 Barrington will be styling the models hair. We will have numerous Irish gifts for sale and an assortment of bountiful silent auction baskets and original art. I cry with joy every time another person signs up to come to our event. This is a community helping me to raise money for the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. These are people who for the most part have not attended Purdue - they just want to help. It is in research where we will see cures. It is as in "Stone Soup" coming together with all our talents to help find cures. I truly believe in Purdue and all their extensive research in this very unwanted invader in our lives. They are in it to win it. If Purdue can celebrate that they have had the most astronauts and men on the moon, then this same university can celebrate cures for cancer. The research center has already made magnificent advances. Please come to D&J Bistro October 5, 2014 to hear encouraging news. Our "Stone Soup" is combining all our efforts to win over cancer. I am blessed to live in a giving community that is supporting me. Please join us in our fight against cancer. We are in it to win over it.
