Learn about wheelchair basketball at free clinics

The Fox Valley Special Recreation Association in Aurora is partnering with Kishwaukee Special Recreation Association in DeKalb, Lincolnway Special Recreation Association in New Lenox, and Variety the Children's Charity of Illinois in Downers Grove to provide a free wheelchair basketball clinic.

Anyone age 3-22 with a physical impairment can play, and you can bring a family member or friend to play with you, too.

Sport chairs are provided for all athletes.

The clinics are 5 to 6:30 p.m. Then you can stay and watch (or play) in the game from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The goals of this programs are to: provide an opportunity to practice wheelchair basketball; see a wheelchair basketball game in action (or play if you want to); and expand opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities in the local community.

The next clinics will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 23 and March 23, at Sycamore Community Center, 480 S. Airport Road in Sycamore.

Fox Valley Special Recreation Association was formed in 1976 and is an extension of the Batavia, Fox Valley, Geneva, Oswegoland, St. Charles, Sugar Grove park districts, and South Elgin Parks and Recreation Departmentl. It provides a diverse range of year round recreational activities to enable residents with disabilities to experience active, healthy and playful lifestyles. Programs are designed to include opportunities that will enhance skill development and socialization, encourage self-awareness and community exploration, promote independence through personal choice of least restrictive environments, and provide a sense of enjoyment, satisfaction and fulfillment.

The FVSRA office is located in Aurora at 2121 West Indian Trail in the Fox Valley Park District Vaughn Athletic Center.
