Kaneland golf outing:The Kaneland Foundation annual golf outing is Thursday at Bliss Creek Golf Course, 1 Golfview Drive, in Sugar Grove. It will be a four-person scramble with two divisions, Men's or Mixed (at least one woman). The foundation provides financial resources to enhance the quality of education for all District 302 students. All events are free. At 10:30 a.m., Shawn Healy, resident scholar at the McCormick Foundation Civic Program, will speak about the challenges at the intersection of the media and democratic politics in the 21st century. At 11:30 a.m., Mary Beth Tinker will tell her story during a presentation called "Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent Community School District." Tinker was a 13-year-old student when she and her brother were suspended from school for wearing an arm band to protest the Vietnam War. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the school's actions violated the students' First Amendment rights. For more information, call (630) 942-3722 or (630) 942-3019. COD is located at 425 Fawell Blvd.Volunteer Fair:The Fox Valley Volunteer Fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is the host. Nonprofit groups and agencies that depend on volunteer should call (630) 879-7134 to arrange for a booth.Women's Night Out:Bring your girlfriends for relaxing and fun evening from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 with "Have Glass in the Garden II" at Wasco Nursery and Garden Center, 41W781 Route 64, St. Charles. Taste delicious cheeses from Curds Whey Cheese Company in Geneva paired with appropriate wines and other goodies. Watch demonstrations of fall flower arrangements, fall containers and yoga stretching for gardeners. Enjoy special pricing, great raffle prizes and a select group of unique products. Find flowers, trees, shrubs, fountains, books, tools, gloves, garden d#233;cor and more to bring beauty and interest to your yard.
