Tom Cullerton stands up for Illinois' retirees

VILLA PARK- State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) filed Senate Resolution 1325 today to stand up against taxing the retirement income of Illinois' retirees.

Older Illinoisans currently struggle to make ends meet on fixed incomes as Social Security remains the primary source of income for one out of five retired Illinoisans.

"We can't afford to tax away seniors' opportunities to live independently," said Cullerton.

Proposed plans to tax retirement income will make it harder for older retirees to pay for basic necessities including food, utility bills and essential medical costs.

As the budget impasse continues, crucial community programs such as Meals on Wheels have already cut meal services to seniors across DuPage County.

The AARP hosted a press conference today in Springfield against the taxation of retirement income.

"Taxing seniors' retirement income isn't going to solve our budget deficit," said Cullerton. "I stand in support of AARP Illinois' efforts to raise awareness on this important issue."
